“Two children’s dresses become sculptural. Each combined with collage elements meant to invoke youthful, but melancholy memories. The ink drawings covering the dresses give a visual narrative of my life. The photography elements reference personal relationships with an emphasis on that of my mother and I. These works are a response to the turbulent nature of that relationship. Untreated mental illness and addiction run rampant through the family. The idea of seeking help for any of these issues is overshadowed by the shame and stigma of a proper diagnosis. This mother-daughter relationship provides proof of how society’s expectations have negatively affected many.”
